Bonus: Ramaskrik 2025

October is spooky month, and those who have followed us for a while are probably familiar with Norway’s scariest film festival – Ramaskrik in Oppdal. It’s been a tradition for us to attend this annual event in Spooctober for a while now, and the festival has been going strong for 15 years. Relatively small, it is an amazing horror movie bonanza filled with scares and laughs. As per (sort of) usual, here’s our recap and personal highlights from this year’s festival. Plus a bonus rant for those who enjoy these sort of things…

Overall, we managed to fit in 15 feature films as well as a couple of shorts between Wednesday and Sunday. The highlights for us were definitely Good Boy (2025), No dejes a los niños solos (Don’t Leave the Kids Alone – also 2025), Bernadette Wants to Kill (2024), Hallow Road (2025) and Onsen shâku (Hotspring Sharkattack – 2024).

Honorable mentions go to The Toxic Avenger (2023), Primate (2025, aka. Julius the horror version if you’re Norwegian), Trizombie (2024) and Exit 8 (2025), all of which we also thoroughly enjoyed.

There were others which we liked, but did not quite live up to their potential or just paled a bit in comparison with the others. However, the biggest (and frankly only) disappointment turned out to be this year’s biggest movie, The Black Phone 2 (2025). Now, we usually prefer not to talk too much about the movies we don’t like – we understand the concept of personal taste, and we don’t want to discredit the hard work put in by a lot of people to make any movie happen, and all of that. But we both (individually, without communicating) found ourselves getting increasingly angry while watching this. So allow us a moment to rant (and just skip reading it if this is not your thing – we won’t blame you).

It is important to note that we both loved The Black Phone (2021), and our MVP in that was definitely Madeleine McGraw’s Gwen. So a sequel focused on her should be a win, right? (Spoiler alert: it was not.) (Actual spoiler alert: if you haven’t seen it, we strongly advise you to do that before reading any more, as we will be discussing some important plot points.) Ok, so first off, the originality of the first movie is completely lost in this. Instead of a new and exciting story, we get a mash-up of A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) (or, probably more accurately, Nightmare on Elm Street part 3: Dream Warriors – 1987) and Stranger Things (2016). The (now dead) Grabber has become a masked Freddy Krueger, capable of invading people’s dreams and kill them inside them. (Except he doesn’t really do that much – he just shows up, scares them, stumbles around, makes threats, and then just disappears again or is easily thwarted by the kids. He is made less scary every time he makes an appearance, completely defeating the purpose.) The only one who can fight him (eventually), is the formerly headstrong and resourceful Gwen, now reduced to a scared and insecure teenager who worries about going mad and needs boys/men to protect her and tell her what to do and how to do it. A complete character assassination in other words. Even her “sassy” retorts, insults and swears seemed forced in this iteration, and not in keeping with the rest of her character as it appeared in this film. And let’s not even get into the stupid retconning of the circumstances of their mother’s death. Who thought that was a good idea?!?

You can see the difference in the posters as well: the attempt to make the mask look scarier in the sequel has only succeeded in turning it into a generic evil devil mask. The very human eyes and glasses featured in the original make it so much more unsettling.

Our other grievances include the dialogue – it felt like it was written by someone who had never had a human conversation in their lives; how easy it was to find the bodies of the missing boys who disappeared once someone ACTUALLY LOOKED FOR THEM! IN THE AREA THEY DISAPPEARED!!! (It took them two nights… After 30ish years… Sheesh. Clearly, nobody cared about finding them before); the stupid and unnecessary backstory of the Grabber, demystifying him and again making him more generic; and just the general soullessness of the entire thing. Is it all bad? Well, no. The production value is there, and the grainy dream sequences look good (despite their contents being utterly stupid for the most part). It starts off ok, and the acting is decent enough. But we’re left with the feeling that this was an entirely unnecessary movie which to some extent ruined the original which we really, really enjoyed. There, rant over.

Anyway, come to Ramaskrik next October! It’s great fun! In addition to showing new (and old) horror and horror-adjacent movies from all over the world, there are always special events and guests. For instance, this year there was a screening of Jaws (1975) in the pool, Troll Hunter (2010) in the woods, and The Descent (2005) with a visit from Neil Marshall, among other great happenings. It’s also cosy as fuck.

Tell us this doesn’t look like the perfect place to watch horror movies for a few days. And yes, it looks like this all the time, all over Oppdal. True story.

Favourites #251-300

As is tradition, as the prophecy foretold, it is now time for you to lipsync… No, wait… It is now time to list our favourites from #251-300. Behold. Our faves:

Now, our more faithful readers may have noticed that it has taken us much longer to get from #251 to #300 than usual. There are many reasons for this, among them work, other obligations, and the pandemic actually leading to more work for us rather than less. So in order to keep it a bit fresh and interesting we’ve decided to mix things up a little bit.
Locally where we live, there are several events coming up featuring films from the list. When these events happen, we’re going to “skip in line” a bit and cover those films early. And we’re starting tomorrow with #755 Pulp Fiction, which we recently had the great pleasure of revisiting on the big screen, followed by a themed meal at the amazing Bula Neobistro in Trondheim. Review and report from that wonderful night to follow shortly!

Next time: #755 Pulp Fiction (1994)

Out of Movies!

Geetings, gentle reader. We’re currently experiencing another consequence of Covid-19: we’re out of movies!

20200516_164126
We’ve got literally nothing to watch!

Ok, not quite out, but the next 5 or so movies on the list are either being held hostage in the closed library and/or on their way here but delayed due to the overworked postal system. You see, once most of the world went into lockdown, we got a message from our Patron Saint and all around good guy Edgar Wright himself offering to send us whichever movies we were missing and/or unable to get our hand on. And he’s been true to his word and ordered us a bunch of stuff! Because he is amazing. However, due to the aforementioned lockdown, things are slow to ship and we’re now unfortunately out of stuff.

We have made the executive decision to give it another week, and if we still can’t get to the library, or if the films haven’t arrived, we’ll just skip ahead a few places and then go back and add in the others as we get them.

Hope you are all safe and healthy. We’ll be back next weekend with either Batman, Blow-Up or Fantastic Voyage – the fates (and the library/postal service) will decide!

Summer Break

Greetings, good People of the Internet.

As summer is upon us, with constant rain and temperatures around 9°C in Trondheim, we are taking a (well deserved, we think) break from blogging to go traipsing around Asia for a while. Thus, there will be no updates for the coming month or so. But despair not! In mid-August we will be back with renewed energy and an overabundance of plucky can-do attitude, ready to dive into 1964 and bring you the next chapter in our movie watching odyssey.

Until then, have an excellent summer. Read, watch movies, cuddle a dog or ten, and just have an amazing time. We know we will.

We love you all!

Stuck in India

Hello, gentle reader. You may be sad and confused about the lack of recent updates, and our radio silence on social media, and we do not blame you. However, we can explain.

At the beginning of the Easter break, a holiday in Norway traditionally celebrated with cabin trips (the more primitive the cabin, the better), skiing, oranges and crime books, Sister the Youngest went against all that is holy and opted instead for a yoga retreat in India.

Clearly, Jesus disapproved (he agrees that the best way to commemorate his death is by reading Nordic Noir books about serial killers) and punished her by cancelling her flight back home. So now she’s stuck in Goa for an extra few days and as such is not only unable to watch movies, but also tweet about them. Which means Sister the Oldest cannot be arsed writing blog entries until her younger and more technically savvy partner in crime is back to tweet about them.

TL,DR: Sister the Youngest chose yoga over serial killers, Jesus didn’t like it, she’s stuck in India which means no more blog entries until next weekend.

We’ll be back soon! Thank you all for your patience. We love you dearly.

Thank you, Edgar!

As regular readers probably know, we lost our dog a few weeks ago. Our Patron Saint Edgar Wright himself read this and contacted us expressing his condolences, which we greatly appreciated. However, he didn’t stop there. He decided to buy us our entire Amazon wishlist (at least everything which would ship to Norway)! And so, these have been trickling into our mailbox over the past couple of weeks:

Use

Fourteen new movies!!! Honestly, we are so thankful for this amazing present, and we definitely picked the right director to worship. Thank you so much again, Edgar! You rock!

Favourites #151 to #200

Once again we’ve gone through 50 films, so it’s time for a recap of old and new favourites. There may be a lot to go through this time, so we recommend you wrap up warm, bring a drink and a snack and make yourself comfortable before you delve into our old posts. Happy reading!

Use the above list as your to do-list this weekend, and have a brilliant time!

Update

Good afternoon, or morning, or night, depending on where in the world you find yourselves today. Mr Wright has added more stuff to the list again, which will influence the numbering from the next post. Just so you know that we haven’t skipped any due to laziness.

For more info on numbering, read this.

Happy summer, good people of the internet! We’re off to galavant around London for a few days, hopefully to buy some hard to come by DVDs!

Update

Hello, gentle reader.

We would (once again – this is becoming a habit) like to apologize for the recent lack of posts. It is exam time, and while we no longer have to go through the hell that is taking exams, we are (un)fortunate enough to be greatly affected by other people’s misery as we both work with students in different capacities. Thus, we may not be able to write anything new until next week as we have to put a lot of time and effort into each blog post (as we’re sure is apparent to all readers). However, next week the exam period is over and we will run out of excuses to postpone posting any longer.

We’re looking forward to entertaining you again next week, and we love you all. Hopefully, you’ll be able to cope without us for a few more days. If not, hit us up on Twitter. Anything to help us procrastinate…

Favourites #101 to #150

As is tradition, once we go through 50 films, we do a recap of our favourites – new and old. So, here we go again. Make yourself a nice cup of tea or coffee, and dive into our old(ish) posts (warning: there are a lot this time!).

By the way, we admit that these 50 have taken us a bit longer than the first two sets of 50, and we can only apologize and make silly excuses such as sometimes we have to do actual life stuff. Which we do. But we’ll be better – we promise. Or at least not worse…

Stay tuned for Quatermass 2: Enemy From Space coming up sooner than you’d think!
